Este es un oratorio moderno muy especial compuesto para coro, orquesta y solistas. Fue compuesto por M. Tippet entre 1939 y 1941, cuando la 2GM proyectaba sombras muy largas sobre las vidas de millones de personas. Júlia Arquillo es una de las sopranos solistas.

With his work "A Child of Our Time" (1939–41), Michael Tippett sent a strong message to his contemporaries about the necessity of understanding others at a time when societies were extremely divided and nation-state disputes ignited the Second World War. Tippett broke away from the norms of his time to bring the voices of the downtrodden heard by replacing the oratorio's chorales with African-American spirituals.
